Chapter 8

Kellan followed Cameron’s scent through the patch of trees. Thankfully, the boy hadn’t run west, where the woods grew thickest. Instead, after a few minutes, he came to a clearing with another house. He’d seen the big white farmhouse many times while on his runs, but hadn’t paid much attention to it until now. It was huge, with white siding and a porch that wrapped around three quarters of the house. A truck was parked in the driveway, but no smoke curled out of the top of the red bricked chimney. All was quiet, and he couldn’t see any lights on inside.

Sniffing the air, his brows pulled together as he continued following Cameron’s scent toward the house. Why would the boy come here?

Keeping an ear out for a sobbing kid, Kellan glanced around. Though the small garden appeared neglected, the play set had been kept up. In his mind, it was a perfect family home. And with that thought, he suffered another one of those pangs. Rubbing his chest, his steps slowed at the sight of a four wheeler. Then he halted all together. In the backyard stood a large oak tree with an unfinished tree house. Kellan didn’t know why he’d stopped. Nothing looked out of the ordinary, but Kellan couldn’t help but stare.

Another flash caused him to stumble sideways, then fall to his knees as pain rippled through his skull. As he gripped his head in both hands, the moving images began.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

He was on his knees, his arm rising and falling as he hammered nails into a piece of wood, one after the other, until he finished a full row. A small hand passed him more nails. “Here you go, daddy.”

“Thanks, kiddo. I’m going to start on this other wall. Stand back, I don’t want you to fall.” Kellan stood carefully and took a step, stopping when he heard a crack. “Get back!” he yelled as a board snapped beneath his foot, causing him to fall backwards. He twisted around, shoving the boy to safety just as he lost his balance. Kellan’s eyes widened, his gaze focused on the screaming boy above him as he fell. Then everything went black.

“Oh my God! No! Please. No. Kellan, talk to me. Kellan? Kellan! Please!”

He came out of the vision, shaking and confused. His first instinct was to run, to get as far away as possible. But the memory of the boy’s face, Cam’s face, his expression full of guilt and fear stopped him. Kellan didn’t know what was happening. All he knew was that he had to make sure the kid was safe.

“Cameron?” Head pounding, Kellan called out frantically. He jogged up the front porch steps of the farmhouse and rapped his knuckles against the wooden door. But it was already open. He gave it a push and called out, “Hello? Anyone home?” Silence. “Cameron? Are you in there?”

Running footsteps came from inside the house, then the unmistakable sound of sniffles. Shit! Teeth ground together, he knocked one more time, before stepping inside.
